Why are Catholics mean spirited and distanced to Protestant Christians?

So most people know that Protestant means to protest the Catholic Church, however I have observed Catholics who seem to dislike a person when they figure their not Catholic Christian but probable Protestants. They can be very nice until they figure out your probable Protestant, then they become mean spirited and distanced. My question is what do Catholics have against Protestants?
