Do northern irish protestants feel 'irish'?

I'm an anglican from donegal in the republic but near the border and i have no problem saying im irish. I play gaelic, know some irish and love irish history and culture. I dont understand the whole love of britain thing, ive been there its ok but not that great that id fight to stay part of it. Why is there such a difference between protestants in the north and south?
